Was all the shifting at Pocono the downfall for some of the drivers and their cars?

It seems like Carl Edwards tore up his valvetrain pretty good and he was talking about those serious r.p.m.'s. Do you think he kinda knew it was his fault for not letting the r.p.m. drop a little bit before engaging thgird gear?
