Your thoughts on this Ben Franklin quote....is it still relevant?

The key words in his quote are "essential liberty". There are ways to protect the American people without asking them to give up essential liberty. But government loves power and thinks that what ever is necessary to get the job done is what power they should have. That is why the people need always be suspect and vigilant not to let government violate their essential liberties.
